Minnesota Exterior Winter Prep: Roof, Gutters and Siding Checklist
Published
A practical fall checklist for preparing your Minnesota roof, gutters, siding and exterior drainage before winter.
Look over the roof from a safe location
Check for obvious missing or displaced shingles and visible debris. Binoculars or ground-level photos are safer than walking a roof.
Clean gutters and confirm drainage
Leaves and debris can restrict water movement. Make sure downspouts discharge where runoff can move away from the foundation.
Check vulnerable siding details
Look for loose pieces, open joints, damaged trim and obvious gaps around penetrations. Small issues are easier to evaluate before snow and ice cover the exterior.
Pay attention to attic moisture clues
Frost, staining or persistent condensation can point to air leakage, insulation or ventilation issues that deserve investigation before the coldest weather.
Trim risky branches carefully
Branches contacting the roof or hanging over vulnerable areas can create maintenance problems. Use an appropriate tree professional for work that cannot be done safely from the ground.
Make a spring list too
Not every cosmetic issue needs emergency fall work. Document lower-priority concerns now so they are easy to revisit when conditions improve.
Need an answer for your house?
Exterior decisions depend on the conditions at the property. Solaris can inspect the project and explain practical options for your home.
