What is LP SmartSide?
LP SmartSide is an engineered-wood siding family. LP offers lap siding, panel and vertical profiles, shakes, trim and fascia. LP says its SmartSide products use the SmartGuard manufacturing process, and covered exterior products carry a prorated 50-year limited warranty subject to the warranty terms and installation requirements.
What is vinyl siding?
Vinyl siding is a polymeric exterior cladding. It is lightweight, available in many profiles and colors, and requires comparatively little finish maintenance. The Vinyl Siding Institute emphasizes that proper fastening, allowance for normal expansion and contraction, and correct detailing around openings are important to performance.
Appearance and design flexibility

Engineered wood can create deeper shadow lines and allows substantial trim, vertical accents and shake-style areas. On projects where the exterior design itself is a major part of the investment, that flexibility can be a strong advantage.
Vinyl
Modern vinyl siding comes in many colors and profiles and can produce a clean, attractive exterior without requiring periodic painting. It can be especially appealing when the homeowner wants a straightforward replacement with predictable maintenance.
Maintenance
Vinyl generally does not require repainting as part of normal ownership. Engineered-wood siding has finish and maintenance requirements that depend on the exact product and finish selected. For either system, damaged panels, failed caulk where sealant is intended, and flashing problems should be addressed rather than ignored.
Water management matters with either material
Neither LP SmartSide nor vinyl should be treated as the home's only water-control layer. The drainage plane or water-resistive barrier behind the siding, plus properly integrated flashing at windows, doors and penetrations, is critical. VSI's installation guidance specifically describes vinyl siding as exterior cladding rather than a water-resistive barrier and calls for installation over an appropriate water-resistive barrier.
What about Minnesota weather?
Minnesota homes experience wind, hail, rain, snow and large seasonal temperature swings. Product selection matters, but installation details matter just as much. Clearances, fastening, flashing, penetrations, trim interfaces and the condition of the wall behind the old siding all deserve attention during a replacement.
Which one costs less?
Vinyl siding is commonly selected as the more value-oriented option, while LP SmartSide projects can involve a larger investment depending on product, trim design, finish and project complexity. Rather than relying on a generic per-square-foot number, we recommend comparing complete scopes for the actual home because removal, sheathing repair, trim, openings and access can materially change the project.
When LP SmartSide is usually the stronger fit
